[예술 유학 박람회] The Glasgow School of Art 글라스고 대학

학교 소개

The Glasgow School of Art (이하 GSA) 는 스코틀랜드의 유일한 독립적인 예술학교로 알려져 있다. GSA는 1845년 처음, Glasgow Government School of Design 이라는 이름으로 설립되었고, 현재이름인 GSA로 1853년 개명하였다. Charles Rennie Mackintosh 라는 이름의 화가이자 디자이너는 GSA의 건축 디자인을 맡게 되었다. 그는 무려 11명의 경쟁자를 제치고 학교 디자인을 맡게 되었는데, 그 비결은 상황에 맞는 실용적이고 단순한 설계디자인이었다. 가장 눈에 띄는 건축물의 특징은, 창을 높고 길게 세팅한 점인데 이 창문은 각 방의 크기에 맞춰져 있다. 그 결과 방 안쪽은 태양광으로 작업하기에 최적의 조건이 되었고, 이는 Mackintosh 자신이 화가였었기 때문에 가능한 배려였다. 2005년 이후로 29%에 달하는 Turner Prize 후보들이 나오고, 2005년,2009년 2011년 Turner Prize 수상자(Simon Starling, Richard Wright, Martin Boyce)가 GSA에서 나온 건 결코 우연이 아닐 것이다. 건축학과는 영국 Top 5, 그리고 세계 10위 안에 들만큼 강세를 보이고 있는 GSA는 Fine Art 분야에서는 최고의 명성을 이어가고 있다.
