1870년 Leicester School of Art 라는 이름으로 설립된 학교는, 19세기의 사회변동의 중심인 기계제도, 공학, 건축 분야에서 뛰어난 면모를 보였다. 1969년 레스터 공과 대학과 레스터 예술대학을 통합하여 Leicester Polytechnic 으로 바뀐 명칭은, 1992년 지금의 이름인 De Montfort University 로 탈바꿈하였다. 드몽포르 (De Montfort) 라는 이름은 Leicester 출신의 백작, Simon de Montfort 에서 유래되었으며 그는 1265년 영국 최초의 의회를 만든 인물이다. 현재 약 27,000명의 full & part-time 학생들이 공부를 하고있고, 3,240명의 직원들이 있다. Leicester City Centre 에서 도보로 약 10분거리에 위치해 있는 이 학교는, 약 3,000개의 방을 지닌 10개의 생활관을 가지고있다. De Montfort University는 그들의 Art&Design 코스를 "직업교육적이며 동시에 창의적이다" 라고 여기고 있으며 프로페셔널한 하고 뛰어난 사람들을 고용하여 학부의 학생들에게 도움을 주고있다. 오늘날 세계에서 명성을 떨치는 교수진들을 고용하여 디자인코스의 리더로 자리매김하고 있으며, 아트코스 역시 동시대 최첨단 방식과 학문조사 및 분석으로 구성되어있다.
